The direct ancestor of modern chess, dating back to at least the 11th century. The King and Vezir (predecessor of the Queen) sit on opposite files compared to modern chess — the King on the d-file, the Vezir on the e-file. The Vezir moves only one square diagonally, and the Elephant (predecessor of the Bishop) leaps exactly two squares diagonally, jumping over anything in between — both far more limited than their modern counterparts. Pawns advance only one square even on their first move, there's no en passant, and they may promote only to a Vezir. There's no castling. Besides checkmate, a player also wins by reducing the opponent to a bare king with no other pieces (unless this happens to both sides on the same move, which is a draw). Unlike modern chess, stalemate is a loss for the player with no legal move, not a draw.
