A 19th-century German 4-player chess. Unlike most four-player variants (where diagonal opponents are partners), Vierschach pairs adjacent players at right angles as teammates (South & West vs North & East). Turns proceed clockwise: South → West → North → East. All pieces move exactly as in ordinary chess, on a cross-shaped board with an 8×8 center and three-row arms extending in each direction (the four corners don't exist). When a seat's king is captured, that seat is eliminated (its remaining pieces are removed); a team loses once both its kings are gone.
Simplifications: castling and en passant are omitted. Check and checkmate aren't enforced — capturing a king directly eliminates that seat on the spot.
