Original Rules
Laws of shogi bound by no history — memory, tiered space, and pacts made in the heat of capture.
Every piece remembers its last three squares — even after capture. A piece you've taken carries its former owner's memory, letting you leap it back to a remembered square once, instead of a normal move.
Three layered boards — Earth, Human, Heaven. All pieces start on the Human layer; ordinary moves stay within a piece's current layer. Climb up or down to the same square on an adjacent layer instead (climbing never captures).
When a piece captures an enemy, you may make a pact — permanently absorbing the captured piece's movement. The cost is that piece can never promote again. The king cannot make pacts.
Western Fairy Chess, Adapted
The same fairy-chess rules found in the Chess Variants collection, rewritten in shogi's grammar of drops and promotion.
A shogi adaptation of the fairy-chess "Circe" rule. A captured piece is reborn — demoted to its base form — on its own original starting square, if empty. If occupied, it's gone for good. No hand, no drops.
A shogi adaptation of V. R. Parton's Alice Chess. Two boards sit side by side; every move ends with the piece teleporting to the same square on the other board, if empty there. Check only comes from the board the king occupies.
Historical Reconstructions
From a Taishō-era invention to Kamakura-period grand shogi — old forms of the game that once actually existed, or are said to.
A faithful reconstruction of the historical Annan Shogi ruleset, traditionally attributed to Shintaro Suzuki c. 1926 — no house-rule additions. A piece borrows the movement of whatever friendly piece sits directly behind it.
Devised in 1976 by Katsuya Tamiya. A 5×5 board with five piece pairs. Every non-king piece must flip after moving — no exceptions, and none of the usual double-pawn or pawn-drop-checkmate restrictions apply.
A reconstruction of one of the earliest known forms of shogi, on an 8×8 board. No rook, no bishop, and no hand — captured pieces are simply removed. A slower, quieter game of attrition.
A reconstruction of the large-format shogi played in the Kamakura era — 15×15 board, 29 piece types, including the Lion, Kirin, Phoenix, and Free King. No hand or drops. The Lion's and hawks' compound double-moves are simplified.
One of the most popular forms of pre-modern shogi, played before standard shogi existed. A 12×12 board with 21 piece types. Leaving your king in check is legal — the game ends only when all of the opponent's royal pieces are actually captured.
An Edo-period variant on a 7×7 board, fought with six bird-named pieces. The two Quails move as mirror images of each other; the Pheasant and Goose leap over intervening pieces. Unlike standard Shogi, promotion is mandatory, not optional — a Falcon or Swallow entering enemy territory always flips.
Educational Mini-Shogi
Shrunk boards and pared-down piece sets, each designed as a stepping stone toward standard shogi.
Devised in 1970 by Shigenobu Kusumoto. A 5×5 board with just one each of six piece types — no lance, no knight. Promotion is available only in the single farthest rank. The major pieces clash from move one.
Devised in 1980 by Natsuhiko Nagumo. A 3×3 board — just nine squares. At the start, only the two kings sit on the board; every other piece begins in hand. Still surprisingly deep.
Devised in 2008 by Madoka Kitao. A 3×4 board with four piece types. Win by capturing the enemy Lion (Catch) — or by safely marching your own Lion into the enemy's home row (Try). The smallest possible introduction to shogi's drop-and-promotion grammar.
Devised by the Japan Shogi Association. A 5×6 board with Lion (King), Dog (Gold), Cat (Silver), and Chick (Pawn). Closer to real shogi's rules than the base Animal Shogi. Marching your Lion to the far rank also wins (a Try).
The Animal Shogi series' full-scale entry. A 9×9 board playing by the exact rules of standard Shogi, with all eight piece types reskinned as forest animals — the full game, dressed up as a children's toy.
Board Geometry
Same shogi pieces, but the board's very shape is rewritten — direction itself becomes the puzzle.
A 6-ring, 12-sector concentric board (61 cells) with the center as a throne. Movement is redefined into eight directions — inward, outward, rotational, and diagonal. Win by checkmate, or by safely walking your King into the center: a Throne Seizure.
A 91-cell hexagonal board built on cube coordinates. The Rook slides along the 6 edge-adjacent directions, the Bishop along the 6 vertex-sharing diagonals — splitting shogi's two long-range pieces cleanly into three axes each. Win by checkmate, or a King breakthrough into the enemy's back row.
