Anomalous Physics

Where the very physics of chess bends — explosions, parallel boards, fog of war, a cylindrical universe.

Atomic Chess

Every capture triggers an explosion across the eight squares surrounding it, vaporising every piece (pawns aside) caught in the blast, friend or foe. You may never blow up your own king, but detonating the enemy king wins on the spot — even mid-check.

Circe Chess

A captured piece isn't removed — it's reborn on its own starting square (and only actually vanishes if that square is occupied). Material advantage becomes a slippery concept when the piece you just took can spring back to life elsewhere on the very next move.

Duck Chess

A single colourless Duck occupies the board. After every normal move, you must relocate the Duck to any empty square before your turn ends — sliding pieces can't pass through it, leapers can't land on it. There's no such thing as check; the only way to win is to actually capture the enemy king.

Fog of War Chess

You can only see the squares your own pieces actually attack — everything else is hidden until you bump into it. This turns chess into a game of reconnaissance and ambush rather than pure calculation.

Alice Chess

There are two boards. Every move teleports the moved piece to the same square on the other board (the move is illegal if that square is occupied there). Named for Lewis Carroll's looking-glass world, it demands you track both boards simultaneously.

Cylinder Chess

The board's left and right edges wrap around into one continuous cylinder. Rooks and bishops that reach one edge re-emerge from the other, opening lines of attack that don't exist in ordinary chess.

Historical Reconstructions

From the Byzantine Empire to the Mongol steppe to the Indian subcontinent, 18th-century England, and a Cold War-era laboratory — chess's real (or reputed) ancestors from across history and geography.

Byzantine Chess

A reconstruction of "Shatranj al-Mudawwara," the circular shatranj said to have been played in the 10th-century Byzantine Empire. The board is drawn as four concentric rings of 16 squares each; pieces move radially and circumferentially, with the Queen as a Fers (one diagonal step) and the Bishop as an Alfil (a two-square diagonal leap).

Grande Acedrex

A grand 12×12 chess recorded in the 13th-century Castilian "Libro de los juegos" of Alfonso X. Towering animal-themed pieces — Lion, Giraffe, Rhinoceros, Eagle — combine leaping and long-range movement into threats standard chess never produces.

Hindustani Chess

A regional variant played in 19th-century northern India, recorded in H.J.R. Murray's "History of Chess." Pieces carry local names — Elephant, Horse, Camel, Minister — and the King may leap like a knight exactly once per game. Promotion follows an intricate file-by-file rule.

Hyderabad Chess

A large 10×10 chess from a late-18th-century Indian manuscript, fielding compound pieces: an Amazon (Queen+Knight), two Marshals (Rook+Knight), and a Cardinal (Bishop+Knight). A pawn may only promote to the piece that started on its file — and only once one has already been lost.

Hiashatar

A 10×10 expansion of traditional Mongolian Shatar. A "Bodyguard" piece projects a zone of influence that restricts every adjacent sliding piece — friend or foe — to a single square of movement, quietly warping the board's usual mechanics.

Spartan Chess

White plays the Persians, a standard chess army. Black plays the Spartans, an asymmetric force with two Kings and five entirely new piece types. There's no single notion of check for the Spartans — a move is legal as long as at least one King remains safe, making it legitimate to sacrifice one King's safety outright.

Gustav III Chess

A variant said to have been favoured by King Gustav III of Sweden (1746–1792). Each of the board's four corners has one extra square attached only diagonally, holding an "Amazon" — Queen and Knight combined, strong enough to checkmate a bare king unassisted.

Maharajah and the Sepoys

An asymmetric chess said to have been played in 19th-century India. One side fights alone with a single "Maharajah" combining the queen's and knight's moves — capture it and that side loses instantly. The other commands a full ordinary army (the Sepoys) and wins by checkmating the Maharajah.

Courier Chess

One of the oldest documented chess variants, referenced in Germany as early as the 13th century. A long 12×8 board carries the usual army plus a Man (moves like a king but isn't royal), a weak Queen (one diagonal step only), a Schleich (one orthogonal step only), a Courier (equivalent to the modern bishop), and a Bishop that leaps exactly two squares.

Duke of Rutland's Chess

A large-scale chess invented in 1747 by John Manners, third Duke of Rutland. A 14×10 board carries the usual army plus two composite pieces — the Crowned Rook (rook + one diagonal step) and the Concubine (rook + knight) — along with an extra knight and two extra bishops. On their first move only, pawns may advance 1, 2, or 3 squares.

Los Alamos Chess

Built in 1956 for the MANIAC I computer at Los Alamos National Laboratory — the first chess-like game ever played by a computer. The board was shrunk to 6×6 and the bishops removed to fit the era's processing power; the pawn's double-step, en passant, and castling are all disallowed.

Peasants' Revolt

An asymmetric variant by R.L. Frey (1947). White has only a king and 8 pawns (the peasants); Black has a king, one pawn, and 4 knights (the nobles, or 3 for a closer contest). Black is traditionally considered somewhat favored.

Shatranj

The direct ancestor of modern chess, codified in Persia around the 6th–7th century. Its weak Ferz (one diagonal step) and Fil (a two-square diagonal leap) give it a very different rhythm, and pawns may only promote to a Ferz.

Oblong Chess

A historical variant documented by Hans Bodlaender in 1998. The Shatranj army is unchanged, but the board is stretched into an extreme 4×16 rectangle where the Elephant's leap becomes a key maneuvering piece.

Great Chess II

Part of the "Shatranj al-Kabir" (Great Chess) family played across the medieval Middle East and Central Asia. On a 10×11 board, the ordinary Shatranj army gains two Dabbabas (2-square orthogonal leap) and two Camels (a (3,1) leap).

Tamerlane Chess

A grand-scale Shatranj said to have been played during the reign of Timur in the 14th century. Its 10×11 board fields a Vizir, General, Giraffe (a compound leaper-slider), Picket, Elephant, Camel, and War Engine — among the most piece-diverse entries in this collection.

Parsi Chess

A regional chess played in 19th-century southern India, recorded in H.J.R. Murray's "A History of Chess." There is no rook; instead the King and Vizier sit at the center, flanked by a Camel, a Horse, and an Elephant on each side.

Petteia & Latrunculi

Greek Petteia and its Roman descendant Latrunculi ("the game of little soldiers"), combined with a mode toggle. Every piece slides like a rook, and the only way to capture is by sandwiching an enemy between two of your own pieces in a line.

Siege Chess

A fragmentarily-documented historical variant, reimagined for two players: a wall runs across the middle of the board, blocking every piece — even a knight's jump — except through a single shared gate on the center file.

Romanchenko's Chess

Said to have been devised by Russian youth chess trainer V. Romanchenko to force students to think rather than memorize theory. The board is a parallelogram that shifts one square with every rank, gradually narrowing the options of pieces caught near the edge.

セメド

Semedo

A "Chinese chess" recorded in a 1694 English publication, so sparsely documented that some historians doubt it existed as described. Reconstructed from the few surviving details — a king that cannot attack, and a "Rocket" reminiscent of Xiangqi's cannon.

III

Large-Board & Multiplayer

Beyond the two-player format — boards built for four players at once.

Verney's Four-Handed Chess

Devised by British Army Captain George Hope Verney in the 19th century. A cross-shaped board holds four full armies at North, East, South, and West, turns proceeding clockwise. Players sitting opposite each other are partners, and a team wins once both opponents are checkmated.

A four-player variant said to originate in 18th-century Russia. The 192-square board pairs a broad central battlefield with four 4×4 fortress rooms in the corners, each linked to the field by a single gate — every other point along that wall blocks all movement, even a knight's jump. Each fortress garrisons an extra Rook, Bishop, and Knight.

Vierschach

A 19th-century German four-player chess. Unlike most such variants, where diagonal opponents are partners, Vierschach pairs adjacent players at right angles as teammates. Turns proceed clockwise: South → West → North → East.

IV

Fantastical & Irregular

Variants unbound by history — built from pure invention.

Monster Chess

One side has only a King and four pawns; the other, a full standard army. To offset the crushing material gap, the weaker side gets to make two moves per turn instead of one.

Dunsany's Chess

An asymmetric variant attributed to the Irish writer Lord Dunsany. One side commands an army of 32 pawns; the other, a standard set — the pawn horde aiming to simply overwhelm the board by sheer numbers.

Four Seasons Chess

An original variant in which the seasons turn as the game progresses — spring, summer, autumn, winter — each bringing its own small shift to the board's rules.

Fischer Random Chess (Chess960)

Devised by former World Champion Bobby Fischer. The back rank is shuffled randomly at the start of each game — 960 possible arrangements — so memorised opening theory gives way to pure over-the-board thinking.

Game of the Amazons

Four amazons per side move like queens on a 10×10 board, but after each move they shoot an arrow that burns the landing square. Burned squares block everyone, and the board slowly seals itself shut. Whichever side can no longer move any amazon loses — a pure game of blockade and territory.

Dice Chess

Roll two dice and move one piece of either type shown (1=pawn through 6=king); doubles let you move any type. If nothing of the allowed types can move, your turn is skipped. A fast-paced variant where reading the position matters as much as the roll.

V

Unconventional Boards

Rebuilding the very shape of the 8×8 grid — concentric rings, boundless space, a hexagonal lattice.

Circular Chess

A round chessboard split into 4 concentric rings and 16 sectors. Pieces move radially (inward/outward) and angularly (around the circumference, wrapping past the edge). A rook or queen can circle all the way around, opening the door to ambushes from the far side of the board.

Infinite Chess

A chess with no edges, sometimes used by mathematicians to discuss mate structures involving transfinite ordinals. Pieces move exactly as in ordinary chess, but with no boundary to stop them, a rook or queen can in principle run forever. Pan the view to follow the action wherever it goes.

Hexagonal Chess

Invented in 1936 by Władysław Gliński of Poland. On a 91-cell hex board, the rook slides along 6 straight directions and the bishop along 6 vertex-crossing diagonals. One extra bishop and one extra pawn per side.

VI

Different Piece Rules

Same board, same army — only the way pieces move or capture is rewritten from the ground up.

Baroque Chess (Ultima)

Devised by Robert Abbott in 1962. Every piece captures differently: the Pincer by sandwiching, the Long Leaper by chaining checkers-style jumps, the Immobilizer can't capture at all but freezes adjacent enemies, the Coordinator strikes at the intersection with its own king, the Withdrawer captures by retreating, and the Chameleon mimics whichever method the moment calls for.

Hostage Chess

As in shogi, a captured piece never leaves the game — it becomes a "hostage." On your turn you can drop a piece from your own airfield onto an empty square, or make a hostage exchange: give up a hostage to the opponent's airfield in return for rescuing one of your own pieces and dropping it immediately.

Billiards Chess

A bishop's or queen's diagonal move reflects off all four edges of the board like a billiard ball, stopping the moment it reaches any piece — blocked by a friend, or capturing and stopping on an enemy. Rooks, knights, kings, and pawns move exactly as in ordinary chess.

N-Relay Chess

Invented by Mannis Charosh in 1972. Any piece guarded by a friendly knight (other than the king or a knight) can also move or capture like a knight, on top of its usual move. Knights themselves can never capture or be captured.

Berolina Chess

Built around the "Berolina pawn," invented by Edmund Nebermann in 1926. It advances diagonally (two squares on its first move) and captures one square straight ahead — the mirror image of an ordinary pawn.

Self Eliminator Chess

Invented by John Gallicano and Steve Mann in 1997. Any piece may "capture" onto a square occupied by one of your own pieces, removing it from the board (your own king is the one exception).

Pandemonium

Capablanca Chess (10×8, adding the Archbishop [bishop+knight] and Chancellor [rook+knight]) combined with Crazyhouse's hand-and-drop system. Capturing an enemy piece converts it to your own color, ready to be dropped onto any empty square on a later turn.
